The Basics: Simple Syrup

I was recently shocked to find that my best friend always avoids recipes with simple syrup because she doesn't know how to make it. As I taught her how to put it together, I realized that maybe some of you are like my friend.

Here's the deal with simple syrup: it's used to sweeten everything from drinks to desserts, and is extremely simple to prepare (as its name implies). A classic variation consists of equal parts sugar and water, while a rich simple syrup is two parts sugar to one part water.
