The outstanding barbecue taste of these beans makes them a favorite for cookouts all summer and into the fall. It's a popular dish with everyone?even kids. Having meat in with the beans is so much better than plain pork and beans. ?Donna Fancher, Lawrence, Indiana

This is similar to my go to potluck beans. I don't use white sugar, vary the beans, though always use baked beans. My secret addition is a small can of crushed pineapple! Try it, it adds a lot of flavor.

Reviewed on Jun. 28, 2013 by Rosie143

I recently made this for a potluck picnic. There where three other bean dishes, and mine was the largest and the only one that was gone at the end of the picnic. So I would say it was a hit with both kids and adults.

I found this recipe in TOH many years ago. The only change I make is using all brown sugar. This dish has been a family favorite, requested over and over.

Reviewed on Jun. 28, 2013 by dobs12

I make this receipe also in the slow cooker. I just wanted to add that I put a dash of vinegar in it and sometimes a little pickle juice for more zip. This is the only way to eat beans.

My mom asked me to bring Baked Beans to the Father's Day cookout we were having for my Dad. I have always found plain baked beans to be quite boring so I took this instead. Big hit! Everyone loved them and with this flavorful a dish, you could never call it boring.

Used this for years. Everyone wants the recipe, however, I change it a little. I put in no lima beans, instead I add black or small red beans, I also substitue 1T dry mustard for the prepared mustard. It gives it a little more zip!

Out of everything I made on 4th of July this was the biggest hit. Didn't change a thing and it was yummy!

A family favorite! Also does well in a slow cooker.

we have big family picnics and this is always on the menu. Everyone loves it.

Best ever baked beans. This dish is requested for almost every function I attend. I also omit white sugar and increase brown sugar.

Main Dish Casserole Recipes: Chicken Sherry

Jan 15, 2008 I made this with stuff I had in the house and my husband loved it. Instead of the beans, I minced and blanched some carrots and mixed them with some frozen baby peas. Instead of Sherry, I used Chardonnay. Instead of 2 cans of cream of chicken soup, I used 1 can of cream of chicken and 1 can of cream of mushroom. Sooooo yummy. Tasted like a chicken pot pie and the parmesan cheese made a low carb friendly crust. Delicious.

Tacos, Burritos and Enchiladas: Vegetarian Burrito Casserole

Aug 30, 2010 This is a great recipe for adapting - we've made it many times. It's entirely too much for an 8x8 though, that wastes ingredients. We make it in a 13x9 like this: First lay down 2 tortillas, side by side. Cover in refried beans. We use a small can of green chiles instead of jalapenos out of personal preference. Layer the rest of the ingredients in any order: peppers, rice, all of the TVP mixture, salsa, & cheese. Top with 2 more tortillas, remaining refried beans, some salsa, we add diced onion here, & the remaining cheese. We serve with Mexicorn on the side, would be great in the dish as well, maybe with some black beans as well. Top with sour cream, corn on the side. It's really impossible to mess this dish up, so change it up to what suits your needs & it will most likely still be great.

Main Dish Casserole Recipes: Brunch Potato Casserole

Dec 02, 2007 Great recipe!!! To make it easier, a bit healthier, and a bit tangy, I used frozen O'Brien potatoes, 10 oz. real bacon bits, 1 cup lite mayonnaise, 1 cup of nonfat plain yogurt, shredded sharp cheddar cheese, crushed black pepper, and freshly crushed marjoram. After baking the casserole, I sprinkled more shredded cheddar on top and broiled it to golden brown...delicious!!!

Main Dish Casserole Recipes: Bierox Casserole

Dec 16, 2008 Aspenglade, your casserole is SO easy! Thanks for the idea.I grew up in a German Catholic community, and Bierox (we spell Bierochs) are absolutely delicious. A couple variations we have used are adding sauerkraut with the cabbage, adding an envelop of onion soup mix, and/or using monterrey jack cheese. The original recipe doesn't call for cheese at all. It also calls for bread dough. You can buy the frozen dinner rolls (easy!). And they are delicious with Dijon mustard or spicy beer and braut mustard. In the original version you roll the dough into a square, place a large couple spoonfuls of hamburger mixture in the middle and pull up corners and pinch together and bake until brown. For crescent rolls, pinch two together to form a square, roll out and then pinch corners. Yummy!

Main Dish Casserole Recipes: Easy Tuna Casserole

Oct 05, 2008 Very good base recipe. I summarized others' advice for my liking so the renovated ingredients were: 2 cans of tuna, 1 can of cream of chicken, 1 can of cream of mushroom, garlic salt, frozen peas, about 1/2c mayo, black pepper, diced onions, a touch of whole milk, about 4 cups cooked macaroni, 1 c shredded cheese, and 1 c french friend onions. It was very good and i couldn't stop eating it for days (tasted good the next day too). Even though I thoroughly enjoyed it, I couldn't stop thinking it needed something else. The diced onions and french friend onions added a little crunch, but more was needed. My mom used to make a tuna casserole using leftover potato chips. I think that would be perfect to try in this next time - crush up the potato chips and mix in with the casserole. It adds a lightly crunchy potato. I'll also add a dash of tabasco sauce next time for a kick as was also suggested. I'm keeping this recipe - in the form I changed it to. :-) 3 stars because it's a base recipe but definitely needs kicks to it. Thanks, Andrea, for the start to many interesting creations from this!

Main Dish Casserole Recipes: Cheesy Potatoes I

Jul 23, 2003 Very tasty and the ooey goey cheese made this a good comfort food. Also, plenty of room for alterations to your tastes. We have added sauted green bell peppers (chopped) and some minced garlic but you can add the "extras" that you and your family enjoy most with cheese and potatoes (or just prepare as is). However, we noticed we did not need to cook as long as recipe recommends, even with the extra ingrediants...perhaps we used thinner potato slices? Either way, have made again and will continue into the future.

Main Dish Casserole Recipes: Lancashire Hot Pot

Apr 12, 2007 Delicious! I had leftover lamb from Easter, already cooked, so I skipped step 1, pre-cooked the potatoes in the microwave, didn't pre-cook the chopped onions, layered the casserole as directed, used beef broth rather than chicken, added frozen peas in the layer with the meat and onions, and covered the casserole dish. Baked for just under an hour and YUM! Hubby loved it, too!

Main Dish Casserole Recipes: Fluffy Potato Casserole

Dec 09, 2003 I get requests for this recipe every Thanksgiving, but I've made modifications. I usually double everything except the egg, cream cheese and onion. Even doubling the recipe, I find that half an onion is plenty, even for onion lovers. I've also substituted sour cream for the cream cheese, with great results.

Meatless Main Dishes: Squash and Zucchini Casserole

Nov 09, 2007 A few things, this recipe yields far more than 5 servings, as I ended up having to go to a second casserole dish. Also, do not cover it as the juices won't evaporate and therefore it will be really watery when you get ready to serve it. Also, this isn't really ideal for a vegetarian as it is really difficult to call a serving of this a meal, it's more of a side dish. With that being said, it was simple to make, and was tastey. I just needed to bake it again without it being covered so that I could get rid of some juices. It really did taste great. In the future if I make it I'll make it with rice on the bottom.

Steaks and Chops: Pork Chop and Potato Casserole

Mar 12, 2007 I tried this recipe out and it was really great! I sauteed some onions & garlic (just a little), seasoned up the pork chops and cooked them fully. I cooked the sliced potatoes seperately only to give them some color and when they were about done, I mixed the chops & taters together, added cream of mushroom and cream of chicken soup (two cans each, we have a very large family) and heated it through. It was GREAT and there were no left-overs for the next day. Even my picky son ate two servings!! Don't try this recipe without first seasoning the chops and adding a little seasoning to the potatoes, too; otherwise it will be way too bland.

Main Dish Casserole Recipes: Fairy Godmother Rice

Sep 02, 2008 I have made this twice now for dinner guests, and they always rave about it. My family loves it as well. They call it my 'homemade Rice-A-Roni', and will not eat the boxed version anymore! This dish is MUCH better! When making it for a dinner party, I make it the day before. I under cook it by several minutes, let it cool, cover it, and stick it in the refrigerator. An hour before I am ready to serve it, I take it out of the refrigerator, and let it get to room temp. Then I pour about 1 cup of extra broth all over the top of the rice to moisten it. Cover with foil, and cook at 350 for 20-25 minutes. Check for heat and doneness, adding more broth if needed. Comes out perfect every time!

Main Dish Casserole Recipes: Aunt Jewel's Chicken Dressing Casserole

Nov 20, 2007 This was really good and pretty easy. I made a couple of changes, per others' suggestions: 1) used TWO 6 oz pkgs of stuffing with 1.5 cups of chicken broth (I thought the cornbread stuffing was really good); 2) sauted garlic, 1/2 chopped onion, and celery in butter first, then mixed it in with the stuffing mixture; 3) added onion powder, sage, and rosemary to the stuffing mixture. My only problem was that I bought a rotisserie chicken, already cooked, from our store and that wasn't quite enough chicken for this dish. However it saved a bunch of time! Next time I will add more chicken. These amounts were perfect for a 9x13 dish. I cooked mine for 35 minutes total uncovered and it turned out wonderful! With these changes this is an excellent recipe!!!

Main Dish Casserole Recipes: Putzwutz

Aug 30, 2012 Great, easy weeknight dinner. As others, I made a few substitutions based on my ingredients at home. Subbed a can of condensed tomato soup and a few tbsp of ketchup for tomato sauce, sauteed fresh mushrooms before the meat/onion mix, added steak seasoning to the venison (no beef in freezer) and reduced everything by a 1/3, using only 1lb ground venison, 12 oz of egg noodles, 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar, half frozen corn/peas and added a 1/4 cup light sour cream for added creaminess. Turned out wonderful, with still enough for hearty leftovers for a few days. Will make again.

Main Dish Casserole Recipes: Bubble 'n' Squeak

Feb 11, 2006 Bubble and Squeak is a traditional English dish that is usually served on Boxing Day (December 26). Obviously, you can have it any time of the year, but the idea is that you smoosh up and skillet-fry together the veggies left over from the Christmas Day main meal, ie. peas, roast potatoes, carrots, cabbage and brussel sprouts. I know this because I have eaten it every December 26 for the last 30 years! It takes its name from the noise it makes while cooking. It doesn't smell especially wonderful while cooking, but the end result is absolutely delicious!

Main Dish Casserole Recipes: Broccoli Casserole II

Feb 19, 2004 This is a good recipe, but feel free to use olive oil instead of butter when sauteing the veggies (tasted just as good to me, and a whole lot healthier!). Also, if you want to make this more of a meal in itself, try adding some garlic for a bolder flavor and scooping it into warm pitas with some herbed bread stuffing. Delicious!

Main Dish Casserole Recipes: Poblano Chicken Enchilada Casserole

Jun 10, 2004 I've learned a couple of things, while making this recipe, that I'll do differently next time. First, I'll roast and peel the Poblanos before slicing them. Second, I'll shred the chicken as I'd like a more authentic texture. It's very rare that I prepare a recipe as written, and I did feel it was lacking a certain flavor, maybe I'll discover it next time around.

Main Dish Casserole Recipes: Amanda's Potatoes

Mar 21, 2005 I must admit I did change this recipe slightly. I did not add brown sugar, because carmelized onions are very sweet on their own, I didn't want it to be a dessert. I also peeled my potatoes, I just don't like the skin. I also did not add the rosemary, partly because I didn't have any and partly because I don't care for that either. But this is the only way I will make "escalloped" potatoes from now on. No dried up potatoes for me anymore. So creamy and flavorfull. My husband raved about these. A must for company or a pot luck if you want to show off! A+A+A+
