Taste Test: Yopa! Greek Yogurt

It's official: Greek yogurt is now the reigning queen of the dairy aisle. New brands have been sprouting left and right, and one of them is Yopa!, by the makers of YoCrunch. It bills itself as "authentic Greek nonfat yogurt," but how did it taste in comparison to other Greek-style yogurts on the market? To find out, we tasted three fruity classics — strawberry, blueberry, and black cherry — complete with an essential, crunchy granola (an added bonus on the package). Find out how Yopa! yogurt fared.

Blueberry

To our surprise, the blueberry flavor wasn't a showstopper. While one taster said the blueberry was reminiscent of blueberry muffins, it was clear the yogurt lacked the authentic blueberry flavor our tasters were seeking, with most declaring the flavor too sweet. This did make it a good contender for a healthier late-night dessert; for this reason alone, we wouldn't count it out completely.

Strawberry

Out of the three flavors tested, strawberry was the sure favorite. Between the fruity chunks, tangy finish, and crunchy granola, tasters declared this cup had the perfect combination of texture and crunch. One even mentioned it "reminded her of Summer." Tasters agreed that between the balanced flavor and convenient packaging, it'd be fitting for a snack or breakfast on the go.

Black Cherry

Although one comment likened the black cherry flavor to that of a cherry pie, this yogurt's aggressive bite had our tasters settling on an average score. The consensus? Again, that the yogurt was too sweet. Several also commented on the lack of fruit and bland texture. The flavor may not be hated but is not likely to be boasted about at the breakfast table, either.

Overall Thoughts
"This is the Yoplait of Greek yogurts," one taster declared. Indeed, it lacked some of the authentic tang and thickness of traditional strained Greek yogurts; yogurt aficionados were also not thrilled by its aggressive sweetness and added "natural flavors." That being said, some of the fruit options, like the strawberry flavor, rang true to their promise, and the convenient packaging can't be beat for those days when on-the-go eating is a necessity.

Taste the Rainbow: Purple

Purple fruits and vegetable are like works of art, yet shockingly abundant in the produce aisle. For our exploration through the colors of the fruit and vegetable rainbow, we were able to track down a bright-purple head of cabbage, a box of blueberries, an elegant, long-necked Japanese eggplant, and a peak-season bunch of Spring onions. Looking for ways to enjoy these purple produce items? Then keep reading.

Purple Cabbage
Purple cabbage can be shredded, tossed with your favorite vinaigrette, and enjoyed as a side salad. Or you can opt for a more traditional preparation and make a batch of classic cole slaw. Purple cabbage also adds a layer of flavor and crunch to pulled pork sandwiches and fish tacos.

Blueberries
While I prefer to carry around a carton of blueberries in my purse for easy snacking, one can't help but get excited about all of the recipes that involve these dark purple-colored berries. French toast skewers with blueberry sauce are a unique twist on a brunch classic. This gin cocktail, Blueberries Gone Wild, is fun and flirty. A perfect Summer blueberry pie sounds delicious all year long. But for a wild way to highlight this sweet berry, grape gelatin with blueberries is the way to go.

Japanese Eggplant
Japanese eggplant is narrower in size and more delicate in flavor than a regular eggplant, but you can use either for any of these recipes. Eggplant can be a polarizing ingredient, but not when it's roasted and tossed into a salad. A slice of roasted eggplant adds a meaty, satisfying component to this vegetarian sandwich.

Spring Onions
Spring onions have a milder flavor than regular onions, but they are more complex than green onions. They bring a sweetness to dishes that undeniably evokes a sense of Spring. Cooked en papillote with cod and asparagus, they bring a delicate onion flavor that doesn't outshine any of the other ingredients. They can also be cooked down into a jam and enjoyed with goat cheese on toasts. And don't throw away those green tops! Toss them into your pot of homemade chicken stock for added flavor.

What's your favorite pick of purple produce?

Taste Test: Vanilla Créme Peeps

Neon pink stalks of rhubarb and sweet and snappy peas may be nature's cue that Spring has sprung, but I don't quite process the transition until I've sunk my teeth into my first sugar-crusted Peep of the season. Sure, Just Born has branched out with seasonal variations as of late - we were particularly fond of a gingerbread iteration that debuted this Winter - but it's a tall order to top the classic that I, like many, grew up with. Now, without giving too much away, I'd argue that they've done just that with their latest offering: a confetti-bedecked Vanilla Créme Peep to celebrate the company's 60th anniversary.

Taste Test: Kettle Maple Bacon and Sweet & Salty Chips

Mention Kettle Brand potato chips around our office - or better yet, deliver a box to our desks - and our ears perk up and mouths begin to water just like Pavlov's famous dogs. True to form, an ineffable itch to tear open a bag overcame us on first sight of the Kettle Brand-emblazoned package, hoping that we had on our hands another Zesty Ranch, Spicy Thai, or Cheddar Beer. While their latest flavors - Maple Bacon and Sweet & Salty - won't be on store shelves till early Summer, keep reading for a first look at their latest flavors, and to find out if they're worth adding to your cart.

Kettle Brand Sweet & Salty Potato Chips

If simplicity is your style, you're in luck: Kettle Brand's Sweet & Salty offering keeps to its titular promise with crisp chips that taste just as advertised - sweet and salty, and not much else. Akin to kettle corn, these snappy snacks pleased those looking for a simple yet satisfying bite, though the majority of our trusty crew of tasters felt they were a little too one-note, even calling them bland, too sweet, and just plain "not tasty enough."

Keep reading to find out how maple bacon translates to chip form, and for our overall thoughts.

Taste Test: Cheetos Mix-Ups

Cheetos fans feel passionately for their favorite variety, whether it's the original Crunchy, Puffs, or Flamin' Hot Limon. But the new Cheetos Mix-Ups, in both Xtra Cheezy Mix and Cheezy Salsa Mix ($4) let Cheetos lovers get a variety of flavors and shapes, all in one bag. We popped both bags open, munched, and evaluated the two newest members of the Cheetos family.

Xtra Cheezy Mix
In each bag, there are four shapes and flavors: crunchy cheddar Cheetos, nacho cheese waffle puffs, double cheddar puffs, and mini parmesan puffs. Tasters noticed that despite the advertising, each of the shapes tasted had the exact same flavor as the original Cheetos. Many enjoyed the textural variety of the different shapes but didn't feel like this bag had enough to make them want to buy this variety over the original Cheetos or Cheetos Puffs. However, the extra cheesy bag still managed to score high.

Taste Test: Numi Organic's Savory Teas

Savory teas?! When we saw the latest line from Numi Tea at the recent NASFT Fancy Food Show, we couldn't help but be intrigued. With flavors like Broccoli Cilantro and Spinach Chive, the garden-inspired teas sounded a little too savory to belong in a tea bag. With curious palates, we bravely tried all six varieties, available online starting today on Numi's website ($8 each), or you can wait until March 15, when they will be sold at select Whole Foods stores. To see our comments and ratings, read on.
